Challenge:
OuterSpatial is an adventure app inviting users to discover outdoor places in the US. They wanted to create a badge system encouraging their audience to visit California’s parks by winning ‘challenges’.
Our brief was to create a badge strategy and design system for the 21 districts and 250 state parks that would be part of this challenge.
Process:
We presented different visual directions for the badges, and landed on a style and palette that is inspired by vintage clothing patches. The desaturated color palette and simple designs reminded us of worn hiking clothes and allowed for a flexible illustration system that we adapted for the 21 districts.
We spoke to California Parks employees to make sure that we captured the most memorable and iconic landmarks of each district.
Solution
The process was super fun and iterative, with many adorable badges left behind, but the result was 12 illustrations that Outerspatial were proud to represent each district.
